General GCR meetings are there for everyone to attend – in fact, we need you to attend because the GCR can’t work without sufficient participation from every single member!
This is why:
At GCR meetings, which happen on average once or twice each term and over the summer, we elect the GCR Executive and Committee, who run the day-to-day business of the GCR for you. We also decide about how the GCR income is spent, what funding to give Ustinov clubs and societies, which events to put on, and many more issues that affect you directly.
However, any GCR meeting can only legally form a decision, or elect a new officer/representative, if a sufficient percentage of members are present for the meeting. This minimum number of people we need to make a decision or hold an election is called a quorum. Currently, our quorum is only 26 members besides the Executive, and we are struggling to even get such a small number of GCR members to attend meetings! Whenever we fail to reach the quorum, no decision can be made and the meeting has to be adjourned, which wastes everyone’s time and effort.
The GCR Committee are all volunteers and sacrifice their time on your behalf to make your experience of student life in Ustinov better and more worthwhile. Repay their efforts by attending meetings and supporting them through your vote in elections and motions, and your input on all GCR decisions.
It’s YOUR Graduate Common Room, and we depend on your opinion and participation!
