Greetings, Ustinovians

Happy Chinese New Year Ustinovians! How are you going so far? I hope you all had great time on Chinese New Year formal yesterday. Did you enjoy the fantastic performances? If you have any questions about the details of those performances, please feel free to contact our performance group! And now, let’s have a look at what’s been going on recently!

Society event review

Last week hairstyle and lifestyles society had a Harry Potter theme tour to Ushaw College, a beautiful place filled with Hogwarts atmosphere. Special thanks to Dr. Jonathan Bush’s support in Ushaw College. The society greatly enjoyed and appreciated the Harry Potter themed tour and the hospitality we received there.

“we dressed in H.P. costume and love the library there. Welcome everyone to join Hair and lifestyle society to try different lifestyles in Durham!”

Ustinov Live

We’re back, Ustinov! The first Ustinov Live of the year will take place on Friday 8th February at 9pm. Come on down to Sheraton bar for a wonderful evening of live entertainment. We’re looking for as many people to participate as possible; if you can sing, dance, play an instrument, read poetry or any other hidden talent you would like to showcase, then contact Alastair Stewart at . Don’t be shy, the more the merrier!

Clubs & Societies Fair Vol. 2

Clubs and Societies Fair Reloaded! In case you missed the first fair in October or you just want to try something new this term, come down to Sheraton Bar on Sunday, February 10 and meet representatives from every Ustinov College society. Whether you want to join a sports club, play boardgames, learn about hairstyles or try your drama skills we have a society for you.

General Meeting

Elections! Votes! Democracy! Pizza!
The next GCR General Meeting will be held on the 10th of February at 7pm (right after the Clubs and Societies Fair!). A couple of positions on the Executive Committee have now opened up and we would love for you to get involved. In particular, the roles of Social Secretary and Livers Out Representative are up for grabs. For more information on these roles and what they involve, check out the GCR website at .

Come on down to Sheraton Park café at 7pm to vote on some important issues, hear about what your committee has been up to over the last little while and ask any burning questions you may have! If you have any queries about elections or the General Meeting, send them to SIDENOTE, THERE WILL BE PIZZA. The deadline for submitting manifestos and agenda items is 23:00 on Thursday 7th, February.

Trip to Beamish Museum

“Tickets for the GCR Day Trip to Beamish Museum are on sale now! This is a chance to step into Durham’s past; buy fresh baked bread in a turn-of-the-century Victorian town, explore a coal mine and railway, and see what a farm would have been like in a time of war rationing.
The trip is scheduled for Saturday 16 February, leaving at 10am in the morning and returning at 4pm that afternoon. Price is £2 for GCR members/children, and £6 for non-GCR members. Entry to the museum is not included in this price, you’ll need to pay for the ticket at the entry gate (good for a year). Tickets are on sale at the GCR Office, from 6pm-8pm every day.

Student Project and IT Rooms opening

Do you know our new IT room and Student Project Room are opening from this week! The IT room in Neville House will be available for use on a 24/7 basis, from Monday 4th February. The room is located on the ground floor of Neville House, just at the rear of the main entrance into the building (NH006A). It will have two computers for student use as well as printing facilities available. Welcome to drop in and use the room as required – no booking needed. In the interim, the room is available as a printing facility only.

The student project room is available for student group work between the hours of 8am and 10pm and is bookable through College reception. Bookings can be taken in advance for maximum two hour periods. Please ask at reception for ad hoc meetings – the room can be accessed on an ad hoc basis as long as no prior booking exists.

We hope that these facilities are of use to the College community and look forward to seeing many of you making use of this new provision in the future!
