College sport is an important part of Durham student life. As the university says:
Ustinov has 10 teams that compete against teams from other colleges in 7 different sports, even more if you also count pool and darts. You can find out more about our teams HERE!
Whether you play in a team or want to keep yourself fit individually, you will find your ideal sports facility in the list below!
The gym is located in Sheraton House, to your left as you enter the building. It contains various fitness equipment, including treadmills, elliptical trainers, cycles, a leg press, and numerous weights. Membership for a year costs £20 for GCR members and can be purchased in the GCR office after filling in an online application form. More information HERE!
While this field does not actually belong to the college, it is the ideal outdoor sports playing ground if you live at Sheraton! Located right around the corner from the college, you can often see both students and residents playing sports or walking their dogs there. Please be mindful of other users! The map below shows the footpath leading to the field from the Sheraton site in yellow.
Durham School Swimming Pool
That’s right, we are the only college with our own access to a swimming pool! The Durham School swimming pool can be used by GCR members (students who paid the levy) every Thursday from 6pm to 8.30pm during term time. More information on access to follow.
The Durham School is only a ten minute walk away from Sheraton Park. Ustinov has special allocated time slots in their sports hall during which our teams can train there. If you have any questions, please contact cs.ustinovgcr(at)durham.ac.uk
Durham High School for Girls
Located on the outskirts of town, a twenty minute walk away from Sheraton Park, this school has another sports hall where Ustinov teams can train during allocated time slots. The hall has a carpet floor and is therefore more suitable for frisbee, badminton, tennis, or netball than for any sports that require a smooth floor. There are no toilet facilities in this hall, but Josephine Butler College / Howlands Hall is just a ten minute walk away. If you have any questions, please contact cs.ustinovgcr(at)durham.ac.uk
Archery Tennis Club
Ustinov can get tennis practice slots here if there is sufficient interest. Please contact cs.ustinovgcr(at)durham.ac.uk for further information.
Maiden Castle is a collective term for the university sports facilities along the river. Most college sports teams play their matches against teams from other colleges there. Contact your captain or cs.ustinovgcr(at)durham.ac.uk to find out where exactly your team plays!
